Invisible Creatures
보이지 않는 생물
인간의 육안으로 볼 수 없는 해양 미소 생물(조에아·메갈로파)과 멸종해서 볼 수 없는 고대 생물(에디아카라기·캄브리아기)을 시공간적 차원에서 ‘보이지 않는 생물’로 접근해 나타낸 시리즈다. 생물학자의 현미경 관찰법과 고생물학자의 화석 복원법을 통해 경험한 학자들의 태도와 과학적 조형성에 착안하여, 가상의 표본과 화석을 캐스팅 복제 기법으로 제작하였다. 전시에서는 해양 탐사선과 자연사 박물관, 수족관과 정원의 공간적 분위기를 연출하였으며, 생물학자와의 협업, 현미경 관찰, 박물관 및 화석 산지 답사, 생물학·고생물학자들의 저서를 경유한 아티스틱 리서치를 인쇄물과 설치로 함께 제시하였다.
매크로 미생물 Macro-micro Organism (2022)은 현미경으로 관찰한 해양 미소 동물의 정교하고 투명한 형태와, 렌즈가 만들어내는 납작한 감각을 투명 우레탄 레진 캐스팅과 LED 패널을 통해 표현한 작업이다.
진화적 조각 Evolutional Sculpture (2022)은 갑각류 유생 ‘조에아 Zoea’를 조각한 몰드에 다양한 레진과 조형 재료를 섞어 눌러 찍은 작업으로, 생물 진화의 개념을 조각적 과정에 반영하였다.
변이적 조각 Mutational Sculpture (2022)은 조에아가 메갈로파로 성장하는 과정에서 미세 플라스틱과 같은 물질로 인해 내분비계가 교란되고 외골격이 변형되는 상황을 상상해 만든 작업이다.
에디아카라 생물군 Ediacaran Biota (2023)은 약 6억 년 전 에디아카라기 생물인 스와트푼티아, 디킨소니아, 랑게아, 차니아, 트리비키디움, 에리니에따를 발굴된 화석과 고생물학자들의 생물 복원도를 바탕으로, 생물의 공통된 ‘주름’의 특성에 주목해 나타낸 작업이다.
캄브리아기 동물군 Cambrian Fauna (2023)은 약 5억 년 전 캄브리아기 생물인 캄브로파키코페, 아이쉐아이아, 할루키게니아, 오파비니아를 실제 화석의 납작한 형태와 달리 입체성을 부여해 가상의 화석으로 구현한 작업이다.
본 작업들은 개별 조각으로 전시되기도 했지만, 살아 있는 수초항이나 이끼·모래 정원에 배치함으로써 생물의 시공간과 실재·거짓이 뒤섞인 장면으로 연출되었다. 인간의 형상과 닮지 않은 다양한 생물이 과거에도 존재했고 현재에도 존재하고 있음을 가상의 표본과 화석으로 드러내며, 생물종과 생명에 대한 보다 확장된 감각과 이해를 제시하고자 하였다.
This series approaches as “invisible creatures” both microscopic marine organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye (zoea and megalopa) and extinct ancient organisms that can no longer be seen (Ediacaran and Cambrian life), bringing them together across time and space. Taking cues from the attitudes and scientific form-making encountered through biologists’ microscopy and paleontologists’ fossil reconstruction methods, Son produced speculative specimens and fossils through casting-based replication. In exhibition contexts, she staged spatial atmospheres reminiscent of marine research vessels and natural history museums, aquariums and gardens, and presented artistic research—collaborations with biologists, microscopic observation, visits to museums and fossil sites, and readings in biology and paleontology—through printed matter and installation.
Macro-micro Organism (2022) expresses the intricate, translucent forms of microscopic marine animals as well as the flattened sensibility produced by lenses, using transparent urethane resin casting and LED panels.
Evolutional Sculpture (2022) presses mixed resins and sculptural materials into a mold of the crustacean larva zoea, reflecting the concept of biological evolution within the sculptural process itself.
Mutational Sculpture (2022) imagines a situation in which endocrine systems are disrupted by substances such as microplastics as zoea grows into megalopa, resulting in the deformation of the exoskeleton.
Ediacaran Biota (2023) focuses on the shared characteristic of “wrinkles” among Ediacaran organisms from roughly 600 million years ago—such as Swartpuntia, Dickinsonia, Rangea, Charnia, Tribrachidium, and Ernietta—drawing from excavated fossils and paleontologists’ reconstructions.
Cambrian Fauna (2023) gives volumetric form, unlike the flattened forms of actual fossils, to Cambrian organisms from roughly 500 million years ago—Cambrorhytium? (see note), Aysheaia, Hallucigenia, and Opabinia—realizing them as speculative fossils.
These works were exhibited as individual sculptures, but were also staged within living seaweed tanks or moss-and-sand gardens, creating scenes in which the spatiotemporality of organisms and the boundary between real and false become entangled. By presenting speculative specimens and fossils, Son sought to propose a more expanded sensibility and understanding of biodiversity and life, emphasizing that many forms of life—unlike the human figure—have existed in the past and continue to exist in the present.
