대표작〈미래 화석〉(2024–)은 오늘날의 지식(생물학)·물질(인공물/합성수지)·기술(인공지능)이 집적된 가상의 화석으로, 미래 시점에서 바라본 현재가 화석화 된 모습을 그려낸다. 화석은 ‘이야기를 다시 쓰는 매개’이자 감추어진 것이 많아 상상을 촉발하는 단서가 된다.
Heemin Son focuses on Scenario and Entanglement in the ways humans approach biological evolution, sculpting speculative fossils and staging them within museum-like formats. Reading the narrative sensibility embedded in biology and paleontology—disciplines structured by hypothesis and inference—she materializes fossils as compressed formations of time and space, organisms, minerals, and force through synthetic resins and casting-based replication techniques. Her notion of “entanglement” expands by cross-weaving the hybrid epistemes of 16th–18th century natural history and natural philosophy with the sensoria produced by contemporary generative AI—resemblance and homology, hallucination, and error. She further connects affects of attachment, longing, loss, and mourning surrounding life and existence with the shamanic affects of Korean musok, unfolding a layered reflection on life as a “being-toward-death.”
Her signature series Future Fossils (2024–) presents speculative fossils sedimented from today’s knowledge (biology), materials (artifacts/synthetic resins), and technologies (AI), imagining the present as it might appear fossilized from a future vantage point. Here, the fossil becomes both a medium for rewriting stories and a clue that triggers imagination precisely because so much remains concealed.
