Entangled Scenario
뒤섞인 시나리오
진화의 ‘서사성’과 화석의 ‘뒤섞임’을 바탕으로 한 〈미래 화석〉(2024-) 조각에 인공지능 기술과 무속 사운드를 협업해 확장한 프로젝트다.
인류의 기술·인공물·인공지능을 생물 진화의 연장선에서 바라보며, 인공물로 만들어진 가상의 화석 조각에 인공지능의 감각을 더했다. 인공지능을 오늘날의 에피스테메-현대 지식의 집적체이자 표준의 집합체-로 인식하고, 작가의 기존 작품과 수집된 답사 이미지를 바탕으로 데이터셋을 구축해 생성형 인공지능 학습을 진행하였다. 생성된 이미지를 그대로 재현하는 것이 아닌, 조각가를 매개자이자 영매로 설정해 인공지능의 오류·환각·유사·상동의 감각이 어떻게 조각으로 반영될 수 있는지를 실험하였다.
여기에 생명을 둘러싼 인류의 애착, 상실, 애도, 염원의 정서를 한국의 불교와 토속신앙이 지닌 무속적 정동과 연결해, 매질을 통해 전달되는 사운드 매체로 작업을 확장하였다.
결국 조각은 진화의 가설에서 출발해, 고대 생물의 압축물인 화석연료에서 파생된 합성수지(레진), 인류의 집단 인지를 학습한 인공지능의 생성 데이터로 물질화되며, 무속적 정서로 확산된다. 이는 지질학적 과거–생물학적 현재–인지적 미래가 하나의 조각 안에 응축된 형태이다.
Undigested (2025)는 초기 세포가 생존을 위해 단세포에서 다세포로, 원핵 세포에서 진핵 세포로 합병·융합·공생하게 되었다는 가설에서 형태를 착안한 작업이다. 이는 린 마굴리스의 세포내 공생설과 조응한다.
Mouth, Anus, Skeleton (2025)는 생물의 입과 항문, 즉 소화와 배설 기관의 방향에 따라 선구동물과 후구동물이 각각 외골격과 내골격을 지닌 생물로 진화하게 된 이야기에서 출발해, 관(通)이라는 형태와 외피·내피에 관한 다양한 생물종의 색감과 질감을 반영하였다.
Love-Born Death (2025)는 생물이 무성생식(개체 복사)에서 유성생식(‘성’의 발명)으로 전환함으로써 종으로서는 영속성을 획득했지만, 개체로서는 죽음이 필연이 된 진화의 역설을 다룬 작업이다. 이는 〈Undigested〉와 〈Mouth, Anus, Skeleton〉에서 파생된 자손의 형태로 구현되었다.
본 작업은 ‘인류의 위기’가 심화되는 시대에, ‘죽음을 향한 존재’로서의 생명을 어떻게 다시 사유할 수 있을지를 자연사·생물학·화석·인공물·인공지능·무속을 뒤섞은 복합적 층위로 전달하고자 했다.
This project expands the Future Fossil (2024–) sculptures—grounded in evolutionary Scenario and fossil Entanglement—through collaborations with AI technologies and shamanic sound.
Viewing human technology, artifacts, and AI as extensions of biological evolution, Son added AI sensoria to speculative fossil sculptures made from artifacts. Understanding AI as a contemporary episteme—an accumulation of modern knowledge and a set of standards—she built datasets from her existing works and collected fieldwork images, and trained generative AI models to produce images. Rather than reproducing the generated images directly, she positioned the sculptor as a mediator and medium, experimenting with how AI’s error, hallucination, resemblance, and homology might be translated into sculpture.
She further connected human affects of attachment, loss, mourning, and longing surrounding life to the shamanic affects embedded in Korean Buddhism and folk belief, expanding the work into sound media transmitted through a physical medium.
Ultimately, sculpture begins from evolutionary hypotheses, becomes materialized through synthetic resin derived from fossil fuels—the compressed remains of ancient life—and through generative AI data trained on collective human cognition, and then diffuses into shamanic affect. It is a form in which a geological past, a biological present, and a cognitive future are condensed within a single sculptural body.
Undigested (2025) draws its form from the hypothesis that early cells merged, fused, and entered symbiosis—from unicellular to multicellular life, and from prokaryotic to eukaryotic cells—in order to survive. It resonates with Lynn Margulis’s theory of endosymbiosis.
Mouth, Anus, Skeleton (2025) begins from the evolutionary narrative in which the orientation of the mouth and anus—digestive and excretory organs—differentiated protostomes and deuterostomes, and in turn relates to the evolution of exoskeletons and endoskeletons. Reflecting this, Son developed tube-like forms and incorporated colors and textures drawn from diverse species’ outer and inner skins.
Love-Born Death (2025) addresses an evolutionary paradox: through the transition from asexual reproduction (copying individuals) to sexual reproduction (the “invention” of sex), species gained continuity, yet death became inevitable for individuals. The work is embodied as descendant forms derived from Undigested and Mouth, Anus, Skeleton.
In an era of deepening “human crises,” this project sought to transmit, across multiple layers, a way of rethinking life as a “being-toward-death” by entangling natural history, biology, fossils, artifacts, AI, and musok.
