키틴
생물의 구성 성분과 조각의 물성을 엮어 나타낸 시리즈다. 갑각류 게의 껍데기를 관찰하던 중, 껍데기의 구성 성분이 ‘키틴 Chitin’이라는 물질로 이루어졌음을 알게 되었다. 키틴은 자연계에서 생물을 구성하는 주요한 물질로, 갑각류의 껍데기뿐만 아니라 버섯의 세포벽, 달팽이 껍질, 새의 부리, 양서류의 피부, 곤충의 날개 등 생물을 보호하는 막으로서 다양하게 존재한다. 키틴이라는 물질은 마치 자연계의 조각가 같았다.
게 껍데기에 버섯을 생장시켜 상태와 시간에 따른 연약함과 단단함을 표현한 Crab-mushroom (2021)을 시작으로, 인간의 건축 재료와 달팽이 집을 교차시킨 Snailshell (2021), 형태의 분리에 따라 생물인 물고기와 식용의 생선이 구분되는 Scale (2021), 새의 부리만을 조각해 버드 스파이크(새 퇴치망)처럼 나타낸 Bird Beak (2021), 갑오징어뼈를 복제해 해양 쓰레기 더미처럼 구성한 Cuttlebone (2021), 실리콘으로 만든 개구리의 허물을 표본대 위에 올려 기묘한 상태를 표현한 Frogskin (2021), 곤충 날개의 맥을 뼈처럼 드러낸 Vein (2021)으로 작업을 확장하였다. 이 시기 작업들은 생물을 구성하는 자연계의 물질과 인간의 인공·산업·건축적 재료와 상징을 엮어 나타낸 조각적 실험이었다.
This series links the constituent substances of organisms with the materiality of sculpture. While observing the shell of a crustacean crab, Son learned that its primary component is chitin. Chitin is a major material that composes living beings in nature: it appears not only in crustacean shells but also as protective membranes across many forms of life, including mushroom cell walls, snail shells, bird beaks, amphibian skin, and insect wings. Chitin came to her as if it were a sculptor within nature.
Beginning with Crab-mushroom (2021), in which mushrooms were grown inside a crab shell to express fragility and hardness across time and condition, the series expanded to Snailshell (2021), which crosses human architectural materials with a snail’s home; Scale (2021), which considers how the separation of forms distinguishes a living fish from edible “fish” as food; Bird Beak (2021), in which only beaks are sculpted to resemble bird spikes (devices for deterring birds); Cuttlebone (2021), which replicates cuttlebone and composes it like a mound of marine debris; Frogskin (2021), which places a silicone frog molt on a specimen stand to articulate an uncanny state; and Vein (2021), which reveals the veins of insect wings as if they were bones.
These works were sculptural experiments that interwove natural materials that compose living beings with human-made industrial and architectural materials and symbols.
